Gotham, CoSA VFX & The Batman Legacy

This weekend, Warner Bros. Pictures releases The Batman, the latest theatrical take on the iconic character from DC Comics and his villains. To celebrate this release, we’d like to look back on our studio’s role in the Batman legacy since 2014.

The Gotham TV series explored many of the same aspects of Batman’s world that we will be seeing in the new movie. Throughout the five seasons of the show, we had tremendous opportunities to define the world of the show beyond the city itself, as we also had the opportunity to create visual effects for several iconic Batman villains. We were involved with developing the visual look for Mister Freeze’s freezing gun, his atmosphere and other cold weapons, and helped give Poison Ivy her vines and other deadly biological effects. When a contagion took over Gotham City, we created a digital makeup look for the virus. If the young version of Catwoman, Selina Kyle, needed to be on a rooftop, we could art-direct that rooftop to make it feel like it came right out of the comics. Throughout the five seasons of the show, we were able to work on the “greatest hits” of Batman’s world – The Penguin, The Riddler, Selina Kyle, Scarecrow, Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, a proto-Joker or two, and even Batman himself – as the show explored seminal times in the characters’ lives.

Within the titular city of Gotham, CoSA VFX created a look for Arkham Asylum, taking fans deeper into that world than had ever seen before in live action. Beyond Arkham, CoSA’s Matte Painting and Environments teams created a unique look for the city, masking the true location of New York used for the filming.

CoSA’s work on Gotham was recognized with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Supporting Role for the Season 3 episode “Heavydirtysoul.” In addition, CoSA received nominations in for the Gotham Season 1 episode “Lovecraft” and again for the Season 4 episode “That’s Entertainment.”

Our time on Gotham ended with the series finale which allowed us the opportunity to see the iconic versions of key characters, and we were even able to end the show with a shot of Batman himself. Soon after the series ended, we again teamed with Gotham producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon for the first two seasons of the EPIX series Pennyworth.

Gotham was a great show to work on,” CoSA VFX Co-Founder and Partner Tom Mahoney enthuses. “As we worked on the show, it was also exciting to see how Gotham evolved in the series,” he adds, noting his excitement for The Batman as well as other Batman-related projects that are coming such as The CW’s Gotham Knights.

Director Matt Reeves’ take on The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz is something we are very much looking forward to seeing, and it certainly brings back memories of CoSA’s time with the “Caped Crusader.”
